Valeda Treatment for Macular Degeneration

A revolution in Dry Macular Degeneration treatment.

About Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in the UK, significantly impacts central vision, making everyday tasks like reading and recognising faces difficult.

AMD occurs in two forms: dry and wet. While the condition typically begins in its dry form, it can progress to the wet form. While there are vision-preserving treatments available for wet AMD which involves ongoing injections, early intervention in the dry form offers the best chance to lower the risk of scar tissue from the dry form and conversion to wet. Valeda Light Therapy is a revolutionary solution specifically designed to address dry AMD.

Traditional treatments for Dry AMD

Historically, there were no specific treatments for Dry AMD. Optometrists typically recommended lifestyle modifications, including vitamins, minerals, eye protection, and a healthy diet, to potentially slow the progression to wet AMD. Valeda represents a revolutionary advancement in the treatment of this condition.

About Valeda Light Therapy

Valeda Light Therapy is the only FDA and CE marked device to treat Dry Macular Degeneration, a common eye condition after the age of 55 where cells in the middle of the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye) die or are damaged. In early stages, this leads to difficulty seeing fine details clearly, and can eventually progress to central vision loss.

Light therapy leverages the power of LED light to target specific cells and stimulate their activity, ultimately slowing down the degenerative process. Valeda operates by energising the cells within the eye, enhancing their ability to perform their functions more effectively.

By promoting cellular health, this therapy contributes significantly to overall eye well-being. To achieve optimal results, patients typically undergo a treatment cycle of nine sessions over a three to four-week period. For long-lasting benefits, it’s recommended to repeat these cycles every 4-6 months.

Who Is Suitable for Treatment

People who are in the early stages of macular disease typically will not notice any visual changes, others may notice changes in their vision, such as increased blurriness. These changes are often associated with the development of small, yellow deposits under the retina called drusen.

Valeda Light Therapy can help reduce the size of these drusen. By doing so, it lessens the harmful impact they have on the delicate cells of the macula. This reduction can potentially slow down the progression of the disease and prevent further vision loss.

Research has shown that this treatment is most effective for individuals who have not yet developed significant damage to the macula, known as geographic atrophy (scar tissue).

Results from Valeda Light Therapy

Valeda Light Therapy has demonstrated promising results in treating macular degeneration. Patients have experienced stabilisation of their condition, improved visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, and a reduction in harmful drusen deposits. Importantly, the treatment has been shown to be safe and well-tolerated. The goal is slow down this progressive blinding condition to preserve vision for as long as possible.

Initial Consultation

Our two experienced optometrist Sachin Patel and Anila Mistry are committed to helping individuals with vision problems. The cutting-edge technology in practice allows us to thoroughly examine the central retinal structure in 3D view and interpret specialised tests to accurately assess central vision and overall visual function.

During the initial assessment, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation to determine your suitability for treatment. This involves a series of advanced tests to assess ocular structure, visual performance, and visual function. Key components of this assessment include measuring visual acuity in each eye and conducting NASA grade Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans of the macula and OPTOS imaging of the eyes.

The Treatment Course

A full course of treatment typically consists of 9 sessions spread over 3-4 weeks, with 3 sessions per week or non-consecutive days. For optimal results, it’s recommended to undergo 3 treatment cycles per year.

Throughout the treatment, patients are regularly monitored using retinal imaging and functional tests to assess progress. The treatment is safe, non-invasive, painless, requiring no downtime and takes around 20 minutes for both eyes.

Post Treatment Assessment

You will continue with your regular eye examination intervals, at the end of the 9th session your visual acuity and eye health will be reassessed through imaging scans and compared to your initial results.

FAQ:

Is Macular Degeneration curable?
Currently there is no cure for macular degeneration. However, treatments are available, such as Valeda, to slow the progression of the disease and potentially improve vision in some cases.
What are the symptoms of Macular Degeneration?

The most common symptoms of macular degeneration include:

  • None, early stages will show no symptoms. This is why regular eye tests are important.
  • Blurred central vision: This is the most common symptom. It can make it difficult to see fine details, such as reading or recognising faces.
  • Distorted vision: Straight lines may appear wavy or curved.
  • Dark spots or blind spots in central vision: These can grow larger over time.
  • Dimmed colours: Colours may appear less vibrant.
  • Difficulty seeing in low light: This can make it hard to navigate at night or in dimly lit rooms.

It’s important to note that these symptoms may develop gradually and affect one or both eyes. We would need to assess the eyes to ensure the above symptoms are related to the macula and not other conditions such as cataracts or glaucoma.

What is the difference between Dry AMD and Wet AMD?

The main difference between dry AMD and wet AMD lies in the underlying cause of vision loss: It’s important to note that dry AMD can progress to wet AMD in around 10-15% cases. Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection and appropriate management of both types of macular degeneration.

Dry AMD:

  • More common: Approximately 90% of cases are dry AMD.
  • Gradual progression: It progresses slowly over time.
  • Cause: Accumulation of yellow deposits called drusen beneath the retina.
  • Treatment: Previously, there was no treatment for dry AMD, however, Valeda Light Therapy has emerged as a revolutionary treatment and can slow down progression.

Wet AMD:

  • Less common: About 10% of cases are wet AMD.
  • Rapid progression: It can lead to significant vision loss more quickly than dry AMD.
  • Cause: Abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina, leaking fluid and blood.
  • Treatment: There are treatments available for wet AMD, such as anti-VEGF injections, which can help stabilise vision and sometimes improve it.
